We Are All Losing…

Let me tell you a little bit about me that you may not already know…

I’m a female.

I’m white.

I’m in my mid-40s.

I’m short.

I’m blonde.

I spent the first 15 years of my career in law enforcement.

I am now a full-time writer, primarily in the health and wellness space.

Based on all of these factors, what have you already decided about me? What type of personality do I have? What are my strengths…and my shortcomings? What mistakes have I likely made in this world?

Until we stop generalizing about people due to one or two factors and, instead, base our opinions of them on who they are as individuals, nobody wins. We will all continue to lose.

I don’t know how to overcome many of the tough issues our country faces today. Obviously, there are a lot of people who feel as if they’ve been mistreated or wronged and who am I to say otherwise? I’m not with them every day. I don’t know what they’ve gone through. I’ve not lived through their experiences.

And I have no control over how other people act. All I can say is what I will act.

For instance, I will treat everyone I meet with respect and dignity, and I hope that they will do the same for me.

I will also do my best to interact with the rest of the world in a way that restores faith in humanity; that helps others remember that good people do still exist.

What won’t I do?

I will not judge someone based on something that has been done by others who happen to share the same sex, race, age, height, hair color, or career.

I will also not judge someone for their actions when I wasn’t there, which also means that I don’t have access to all of the facts as each party perceives them to be.

I will say it again…

Until we stop generalizing about people and, instead, base our opinions of them on who they are as individuals, nobody wins.

We will all continue to lose.
