Building your grit is hard. Though it makes you stronger in the end, sometimes it’s tough to stay the course.
An illness threatens your health. Family becomes too demanding. A good friend lets you down.
When I’m going through these things, I often find that a few well-spoken words help revive my motivation to continue to put one foot in front of the other in my journey to become a better me.
If you’re in need of the same, here are a few inspirational quotes that I find extremely inspiring, though aren’t typically shared mainstream:
“We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” ~ William Shakespeare
Isn’t this true? It’s so easy to see who we are in the moment, to feel nothing but our pain, and so difficult to see what we can become. But, oh, what we can become is typically much more than we ever dreamed…as long as we stay the course.
“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” ~ Joseph Campbell
Having a plan is great, but having the flexibility to deviate from that plan when new opportunities arise is even better. If I hadn’t changed my life plans, I would have missed out on some pretty amazing things…marrying the man I love, living in some absolutely beautiful areas of the country, and owning my own writing business. What might you be missing out on simply because you’re too stuck to your plan?
“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
So many times we think we have to do big, bold things in order to make a difference. Not at all. All it takes is a small ripple to carry your actions across an entire pond. Focus on being that ripple instead. It’s a whole lot easier to manage, yet can still make a huge impact.
“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” ~ e.e. cummings
Have you ever noticed that when you’re more confident, you’re also more adventurous? You tend to try new things, go new places, and do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do? Work on building your confidence so you continue to live life to the fullest. How do you do that? Don’t aim for perfection; aim for experience. That’s a lot more fun.
“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” ~ Nido Qubein
It’s super easy to look at your life today and think that you’ll never get anywhere or that your dreams will never become reality. That’s simply not true. Where you are today is merely a starting point to where you’re going to be tomorrow. As long as you take steps in the right direction, you’ll be on your way.
“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.” ~ Og Mandino
Just because things don’t seem to be going well doesn’t mean that life isn’t still beautiful. There is value in everything, whether dark or light; sometimes you just have to look harder to find it. Besides, hardships aren’t there to break you. They’re there to help you realize your strength (your grit).
“Belief creates the actual fact.” ~ William James
Your perceptions — what you believe about yourself, others, and the world around you — is your reality, regardless of whether it’s right, wrong, or indifferent. So, why not believe great things and make those the facts? Imagine how much better your world could be?
“When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves.” ~ William Arthur Ward
When you’re feeling down about yourself, reach out to help someone else. Not only will it make them feel better, but you’ll feel better too. This could be by volunteering or simply by being there for a friend. That part’s up to you!
“I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life, and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.” ~ Georgia O’Keeffe
It’s okay to be scared. We all experience fear. The important thing is to not let that fear stop you, that is, unless it is a reasonable fear and could actually do you harm. But if it’s just fear that exists in your head, working through it is extremely empowering…and may even change your life.
“Be faithful to that which exists within yourself.” ~ Andre Gide
The internet is full of advice. Family and friends are full of advice. Hell, I’m full of advice! While some of it is good, what works for one person might not work for you. In the end, stay true to who you are and walk the path you feel you need to walk. This is your journey. Make it what you want it to be.
“You have two options in life: make excuses or make changes.” ~ The Grit Girl
Yes, this last one is mine, but it’s one I tell myself often. If life isn’t where I want it to be, I can either try to excuse it away with all of the things I believe are holding me back OR I can do what I need to do to get it on track. The same choices exist for you. So, what are you going to do?
